Sleep Apnea Services
Our doctors at Dreamwell Center take sleep apnea very seriously. Sleep apnea can lead to dangerous health complications, depriving you of the rest you need to function at your best. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions, known as apneas, can last from a few seconds to minutes and can occur multiple times an hour, leading to poor sleep quality and various health issues.
There are three main types of sleep apnea:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

The most common form, OSA, occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat relax excessively, causing a temporary blockage of the airway.

Causes: Factors include obesity, large tonsils, a thick neck, and structural abnormalities in the airway.
Symptoms: Loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, and morning headaches.

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)

This type occurs when the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.

Causes: Often associated with certain medical conditions, such as heart failure or stroke, and can also occur due to certain medications.
Symptoms: Frequent awakenings during the night, breathing pauses, and difficulty staying asleep.

Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome (Treatment-Emergent Central Sleep Apnea)

A combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea. This condition can develop in individuals being treated for OSA with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy.

Causes: The exact cause is not well understood but is thought to be related to the body's response to CPAP therapy.
